About me
I am a Consultant Eye Surgeon with a special interest in managing complex Glaucoma and Cataract conditions.
I graduated from the University of Wales, Cardiff, UK, in 1993. I underwent the Specialist Registrar training programme at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham. I then undertook the prestigious Glaucoma Fellowship Training at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, before taking up my current consultant position in 2004. In 2013, I was awarded an MSc in Medical Leadership from the University of Warwick.
I was appointed Consultant Eye Surgeon with a special interest in glaucoma at Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre in 2004. I provide a supra-regional tertiary referral service for complex glaucoma, including childhood glaucoma. I developed novel surgical techniques for safe tube-shunt implant surgery and published favourable results in the medical literature. I pioneered angle-closure glaucoma surgeries and introduced the goniosynechialysis procedure for angle closure in the UK. I am also a specialist in Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgeries (MIGS), including the OMNI Gonioscoptic Assisted Transluminal Trabeculotomy (GATT), micro-trabecular iStent implant and endoscopic cycloablation procedures.
I am a very experienced cataract surgeon. I have performed over 20,000 cataract operations with very low complication rates compared with national standards. I routinely use customised lens implants (e.g. toric, extended depth of focus and multifocal lens implants) to correct astigmatism and enhance vision without glasses for intermediate and short distances.
I run an active research programme and have published over 40 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. My research publications include surgical outcomes in childhood glaucoma, anterior segment imaging for angle closure, the results of angle closure surgeries, and tube-shunt implant surgery. I also run a popular international glaucoma fellowship programme and have trained over 30 consultant glaucoma specialists in the UK and overseas.
I am an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, co-founder and serving co-secretary of the UK Paediatric Glaucoma Society (www.ukpgs.org.uk), and an NHS Bronze National Clinical Excellent Award holder. I have been an invited speaker at many international and national medical conferences.
