About me

I am a Consultant Eye Surgeon with a special interest in managing complex Glaucoma and Cataract conditions. I am a full-time consultant at Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, a University of Birmingham teaching eye unit at City Hospital, Dudley Road, Birmingham. It is also one of the biggest eye hospitals in the UK. I am also a Clinical Trial Scholar at the Birmingham Clinical Trial Unit at the University of Birmingham.

I graduated from the University of Wales, Cardiff, UK in 1993. I underwent the Specialist Registrar training programme at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham. I undertook prestigious Glaucoma Fellowship Training at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London before taking up my current consultant position in 2004. I was awarded an MSc degree in Medical Leadership from the University of Warwick in 2013.

I served as the Lead Clinician for the Glaucoma Service at Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre between 2007 and 2012. I served as the Clinical Director for Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre from 2012-2014 and then the Group Director for Surgery B from 2014-2016.  I provide a supra-regional tertiary referral service for complex glaucoma including the renowned Childhood Glaucoma Service.  I developed a safe surgery system for tube-shunt implant surgery and published favourable results in the medical literature. I am a pioneer in angle-closure glaucoma surgeries introduced the goniosynechialysis procedure for angle closure in the UK. I am also a specialist in the Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgeries (MIGS) including the endoscopic cycloablation procedure, iStent microscopic trabecular bypass surgery, XEN gel-tube implant and the new Gonioscoptic Assisted Transluminal Trabeculotomy (GATT) procedure. These procedures can be performed with cataract surgery to enhance eye pressure control after the operation.

I run an active research programme and have supervised post-graduate PhD and MD research projects. My research portfolio including surgical outcome in childhood glaucoma, anterior segment imaging for angle-closure, the outcome of angle-closure surgeries and the tube-shunt implant surgery for uveitis related glaucoma.
